Can
my location get broadband Internet service?
There
are many kinds of broadband Internet service but two of the more
popular and inexpensive types are digital subscriber lines (DSL)
and cable modems. If you are telecommuting, you can get ADSL service
(asymmetric DSL) that runs at speeds up to 1.5 Mbps for downloading
and 384 kbps uploading. You may even be able to get a static IP
address. For businesses, you can get SDSL (symmetric DSL) with
speeds up to 1.5 Mbps in both directions as well as a static IP
address. For a great discussion of DSL and to determine whether
your location can get DSL service, go to http://www.dslreports.com.
Cable
modem service is available for residential customers who have
access to digital cable systems (i.e., your cable company has
upgraded its cable infrastructure and offers digital cable services).
Check the web pages for your cable company to see whether your
location can receive broadband Internet service.
